Notes on Data Privacy Policy

In effect from 07. jun 2022.

Besides the wondering and excitement around what cool and usefull features to add, we acknowledge that data privacy protection is a precondition for this project to really "work", so it is handled as top concern.

Starting from installation and a notification of what this extension can do:

  • "Read and change your data on www.youtube.com"
  • "know you email address"

but also considering main functionality of this extension:

  • showing public comments with timestamps
  • creating and managing private comments ("note-to-self"s or "bookmark"s)

various question may come to mind about how all this actually works and how your data is handled and secured.

This privacy notice aims to provide specifics about what and how we collect, use and share your data while you are using TimeComments extension.

First, this extension is active only on www.youtube.com
but only on www.youtube.com/watch pages actually do any work.

TimeComments reads from page only what is necessary for functioning as advertised in the extensions description, and makes minimum changes to the page to provide what is promised:
Comments (public and private) with time references displayed in a "front and center" way.
If it doesn't have anything to show (no comments with timestamps) it makes itself small, and even dissapears for "live" videos.

Displaying public content with timestamps entails following:
Extension is collecting content with timestamps by:

  • reading description of the video
  • checking for timestamps in the public comments that start to appear when you scroll down
  • Programmatically calling backend application for public comment data, if free quota or version allows it. This call is completely anonymous, only video ID is sent as payload.

We do not track in any way your web browsing activity.

As for private comments (again, "bookmark"s or "note-to-self"s) extension works like this:

For every video that starts playing an extension checks if you had previously made a bookmark for it. But it does not call the backend application. It checks with a cache which is on your local computer. Only if you create/edit/delete bookmark, it calls backend and updates local cache. Data sent for this purpose does not contain personally identifiable data (email) and are transmited and stored in secure fashion and not shared with anyone.

If you delete a bookmark or uninstall an extension bookmarks you created will still be present. After one month they will be finally erased along with all other data we might have about you.

If backend application sounds misterious, it's really not.
For backend application it is used Google App Engine, and no server outside of Google's cloud enviroment is ever used.
